8:30 AM – Head to work Leave for work. I *love* the R train.
If just reading this exhausts you, that's okay, you are not alone. But it works for Michael, and for more than 15 years he has experimented and found what gives him peak productivity. The critical part is finding what works for you, not pretending to be Michael or Margaret Thatcher.
Parents know how precious sleep is. Those first few weeks with a newborn test your ability to perform on minimal and infrequent sleep. I remember quite clearly how that first time you get a block of four continuous hours sleep after weeks of 90-minute blocks, you feel refreshed, revived, and energized. Your body quickly adapts to how much sleep you are giving it and survives—but surviving is not thriving.
Walk along the sidewalk a block away from the entrance to a corporate office block or campus near you and just stop and watch. Pay attention to the body language, facial expressions, and level of energy in everyone's walk. What can you determine from five minutes of observation? I often do this at my client buildings—just wait in the morning and watch. Are people buzzing with excitement and conversation or are people slowly trudging into the office?
Living in Southern California, I get to walk my daughters to school most days of the week throughout the whole year. If you have ever watched five- and seven-year-olds walk to school, that is where you see excitement and energy. They have so much energy in the morning that they skip, hop, and cartwheel the mile walk to school. I tell them to run to the third tree and do 20 jumping jacks while I catch up. Imagine if you could capture the energy and excitement of a five year old? Well you can with the sleep revival plan.
